Both the LCS Lightning Senior Girls and Senior Boys are are the 2022 Eastern Valley Athletic Association (EVAA) basketball champions.
Both our senior teams are heading are heading to the BC High School Provincial Championships beginning March 2.
On February 19, our provincially ranked #1 senior girls turned in a dominant performance on Seniors’ Night in the EVAA final. Lead by legendary head coach Danni Gardner, the Lightning girls took on provincially-ranker #8 Abbotsford Traditional Titans in the championship game, and came out ahead 107-35. EVAA Allstar recognition was awarded to Laine Shelvey and Taelor Coxford. The playoff MVP award went to sharpshooting Sydney Bradshaw. Each of the LCS elite three were named in the Varsity Letters as among the top basketball players in the province.
On Saturday, February 26, the Lightning boys took on EVAA rivals, the Abbotsford Christian Knights, at TWU’s Enarson Gymnasium. The night before, the boys also beat Abbotsford Traditional Secondary in the semis, on Seniors Night.
The EVAA final might have been the most epic game in Lightning history. Down 12 points in the fourth quarter, the boys stormed back into the game on some tenacious defending, and tied the game on an inbound play with no timeouts and 4 seconds left. At the buzzer, Silas VanHuizen tied it with a three-pointed from just inside the half. Down 7 in the first overtime, the Lightning tied it again, and then won in the second OT with three starters fouled out.
Allstar recognition went to Lucas Woelders and Daniel DeHeer-Amissah, while Silas VanHuizen was tournament MVP. Awards aside, this was a team effort that included Micah VanHemert coming cold off the bench late in OT to come up with a huge block to keep LCS ahead for good. What a ride! What a heart attack!
Thank you to all the fans from Lightning Nation who came out to cheer on our teams. We can’t wait to hear your energy at the Provincials. Go Lightning!
