“Being a part of the show has also helped me grow in my confidence as a person and with certain things I felt insecure about. Ever since we started rehearsing and I stepped out of my comfort zone, I’ve seen God work in ways I didn’t see before, and maybe that’s just coincidence, but I think the people and the class environment, in general, have given me a new lens on how to view certain things”
Sawyer Friesen, Grade 10, The Beast
April of 2023 saw 40 High School Students and 10 Middle School Students sing, dance, and act their hearts out in the sold-out production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Directed and Choreographed by Cody Friesen, Musical Direction by Matt Tressel, and Art Direction by Briel Walters, the show far surpassed any expectations of what was possible.
“One of the best musicals we have ever seen. It was full of life, with beautiful songs, dance and unexpected funny moments, very professional, with so many talented young actors performing. Great work everyone, we can’t wait to watch your next productions. It was a Broadway level performance!”
Celina Zukowska, Audience Member
Over the course of a year, the LCS students partook in a Musical Theater Class for grades 9-12. Middle School students joined in rehearsals where they could. This experience allowed for the community within the cast to be built, acting abilities to be refined, and to make every moment on stage engaging for the audience.
Our community is looking to advance its commitment to being a welcoming community, one that celebrates the arts as part of our community’s development, and helps support youth connection, wellness, and belonging.
We have continued to invest in upgrading our arts spaces.
“One thing I love most about this cast is that we have fun. We have created a community of encouragement and laughter, with Christ so obviously at the center. I am so appreciative of the culture that this cast has created. When we are together, popularity does not matter. Athleticism doesn’t matter. Grades don’t matter. The friends we have outside of class don’t matter. Disregarding age or personality, everyone in this class has the chance to be themselves, and so many friendships have been built. This cast is a kind of secret community, and nobody else in the school fully understands what a joy it is to be part of it”
Olivia Vanderveen, Grade 11, Belle
Productions with this caliber and quality are important in keeping a healthy, vibrant, and versatile arts department at LCS. Parents volunteered dozens of hours to help build the sets and props, while High School Science Teacher, Barb Powell, led the charge in creating and sourcing beautiful costumes.
“The arts are perhaps the most effective way for people to express ideas, opinions, and perceptions about the world, and without the arts, life would be really boring”
Finn Sawatzky, Grade 10, LeFou
We are excited to continue the momentum from Beauty and the Beast with a brand new Christmas Musical Comedy coming to LCS High School this December: “BEHOLD: A Christmas Story.” Written by former LCS drama teacher and Vancouver playwright, Chantal Gallant, the show follows a group of youth trying to put on the Nativity – but they get distracted along the way. Filled with the essence and sounds of Christmas, this show is sure to dazzle you and get you into the Christmas spirit. Stay posted on our social media for updates on ticket sales.
“We want to not just train up good artists or actors, but good artists and actors who passionately love Jesus. The arts at LCS is a place that brings people across grades together for a common goal, to produce something truly remarkable. The arts allow students the freedom to create, play, explore, and figure out who they are in Christ. In a way, theater is life. It develops communication skills, empathy towards others, problem-solving techniques, the importance of relationships, creative thinking, public speaking, and it’s FUN”
Cody Friesen, Musical Theater Director
