LCS Foundation: Planning Your Giving Seminar

Print

LCS Foundation

At the Foundation’s October seminar on Wills & Estate Planning, the material presented was extremely informative, but there was so much information to absorb that we have decided to offer the second half of the session on its own, going into greater detail on estate planning. See below for details.

“Planning Your Giving – How to unlock the power of generosity”
Thursday, February 21, 7 – 9 pm at Southridge Church.

Christians have a special responsibility to be good stewards of the resources God has entrusted to them—during their lifetime and beyond their lifetime as well. One of the ways to do that well is with an estate plan that reflects your deepest values and beliefs.

In this seminar we’ll explore a variety of creative ways to express your generosity while also offering significant tax savings. We’ll cover:

·         Gifts of life insurance

·         Gifts of securities

·         Cash and non-cash gifts

·         Bequest gifts

·         Charitable donation tax tips

LCS Golf Tournament Raises $26,000!

The 10th Annual LCS George Ravenek Memorial Golf Tournament was held Friday, September 21st at the beautiful Redwoods Golf Course. We had a wonderful day with 140 golfers and a fun filled evening raising a record $26,000!

Each year the Golf Tournament helps Langley Christian School grow in its ability to offer a curriculum that incorporates relevant, active learning experiences in the classroom by providing revenue that goes directly to developing and expanding the school’s educational program and indirectly to meeting the aesthetic, emotional, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual needs of all its 1000 students.   This year, all proceeds from the tournament  will go towards ICT (Information Communication Technology) upgrades of classroom projection systems, iPads and netbooks.

Thank you to everyone who supported the 10th Annual Tournament!

“You Can’t Take it With You!”
By Cathy Kits

On October 11th, the LCS Foundation hosted a free dessert evening on Wills & Estate Planning.

“There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’” (Abraham Kuyper)

So, if you can’t take it with you, what happens to it? Our speaker, Doug Fordham, the Director of Stewardship Ministries for the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in BC and Yukon, walked us (well, ran us, really), through so many aspects of wills & estate planning such as: how and when to update your will, what will happen if you don’t have a valid, current will, options for ownership of joint property, planning for your potential incapacity, appointing Executors, your estate and taxes, and gift planning and leaving a legacy.

The feedback was so positive that we’re considering offering this session again, possibly dividing it into 2 parts as there was simply so much information to absorb!  Some comments from the evening: “Great info…I didn’t know how much I didn’t know”, “great suggestions to reduce income taxes”, “it opens one’s eyes”, “learning new important things for better planning”, “very informative and easy to follow”, “Doug’s enthusiasm and obvious knowledge”, “the presentation was excellent”.

The LCS Foundation was established to help provide tuition assistance, provide scholarships for graduating students and to ensure the funding of future capital expenditures for LCS. The LCS Foundation Board has been actively sharing the vision of building a foundation to secure affordable education at LCS for generations to come.

In addition to sending out information booklets to our Grandparent and Alumni parent community, the Foundation Board is committed to offering continuing education seminars twice a year that focus on various aspects of money management, wills & estate planning, and Biblical giving.  These free dessert evenings are practical sessions with resources that attendees can take home.  Stay tuned for more information about our spring seminar. The Current balance in the Foundation is over $120,000.

Letters From Gondolikhethwa April 2012

LETTERS FROM GONDOLIKHETHWA

On April 4th Mr. Mashudu Madzivhandila, Mpho Ramudzwagi and Martha Mudau arrived from Gondolikhethwa Christian School. They spent two weeks as part of our community, and we were sad to see them go on April 17th.  They reconnected with our Gondo team from last year: Chris Ruiter, Alex Roersma, Bryce Minke and Joel Kleingeltink.  They spent time in classrooms at all three campuses answering questions about life in South Africa.  As well, our Gondo guests were able to visit Grouse Mountain, tour Vancouver, Stanley Park, the aquarium, take in the car show, the Spring Fling, and participate in many other activities.  They even were able to take a plane ride over the Lower Mainland!

Mr. Madzivhandila wrote the following letter to us.

To: Langley Christian School

Greeting in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all of the Langley Christian School community for the hospitality you have shown to me and my students from Gondolikhethwa Christian School.  This was my first tour outside South Africa, my first outside Africa, and my first on the plane.  This goes to say, “You have been a blessing to me.”

I have enjoyed interacting with teachers and students, and also doing some presentations in the class about life in South Africa.  Our school (Gondolikethwa) is planning to start a workshop for engineering, and we were inspired by you.  I have loved your class, music, social studies, and Bible, to mention a few.  I also enjoyed my visit to the elementary school where we interacted with kindergarten, grade 2 and 3.

I was invited by several families for dinner, the Roukemas, deGroots, Ruiters, Kleingeltinks and the Wergelands.  That was so good for me.  I loved every minute of it.  May the good Lord be with you.  Mrs. Jarvie made my days at school so easy.  She organized everything for me and she is such a wonderful person to work with.

Peter and Jackie Van Huizen hosted me in their house.  It was wonderful to stay there.  They treated me like one of their own.  Thanks so much Peter and Jackie, and to the Minkes, Ruiters and Roersmas for accommodating Mpho and Martha – God be with you.  I would also like to thank Mrs. Endacott and the Roersma family for taking us to Grouse Mountain for snow activities and on the plane trip.

To the entire leadership of Langley Christian School, teaching staff and the student community, may the good Lord be with you and your families.  Thank you again for making it possible for us to visit Canada.

“Ndo livhuwa nga maanda”.  Thank you so much!

Mr. Mashudu Madzivhandila

Martha, a grade 10 student, wrote the following:

What I like most here in Canada is ice skating and the aquarium.  I love ice skating because I enjoy it and have fun, and I won’t get to skate on ice in South Africa.

The reason why I love the aquarium is that I saw all kinds of insects, fish and many other things.  What I like most about the aquarium is to watch the beluga and dolphins show what activities they can do, and show us what they were taught to do.  I also like the different types of seals, like the sea lion, sea otters and many other seals interact.  I like how the seals dive in the water and when they enjoy themselves inside the water.

At the aquarium I also saw the different kinds of star fish, birds, frogs, fish, stingrays and butterflies.

Martha Mudau

Mpho, a grade 11 student, wrote the following for us:

How I See

I had a dream that one day I would depart from South Africa to another place.  Finally, I got the opportunity to explore a place called Canada.  Being in Canada was like the best experience of my life.  I finally got a chance to explore the kinds of cold places that God has created, and what kind of people he created.  We serve an awesome and mighty God.

Ndi a livhuwa (thank you).

Mpho Ramudzwagi
